Indiana Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

2023 INTESOL Pre-Conference: WIDA Standards and ELL Leadership Collective

On November 17th, 2023 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Marriott East in Indianapolis, we are hosting an INTESOL pre-conference.

Registration costs $50, and is open to ENL specialists, leadership, and anyone concerned with teaching language learners in Indiana.

Registration is limited to 100. Lunch is provided.

9:00 - 12:00: WIDA Standards Workshop with IDOE

The INTESOL Pre-Conference, presented by IDOE’s EL team, will focus on the blending of student language development and content learning via hands-on engagement with the 2020 Edition of the WIDA Standards. With WIDA Standards implementation, instruction – especially in the general education classroom – is tailored for EL students to build academic language while engaging with grade level content. Educators with all levels of WIDA Standards knowledge from all roles (administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, etc.) are welcome to attend. Participants will work alongside like peers through activities which highlight meaningful and beneficial uses of the updated WIDA Standards within their contexts.

1:00 - 4:00: INTESOL ELL Regional Collaborative

The INTESOL Pre-Conference will focus on leadership development, advocacy needs and strategies, and sharing information about what is taking place in the different regions of Indiana. Founded in 2015, this collaborative group has been responsible for increasing funding, adopting a partnership for the WIDA consortium and increasing requirements and enforcement for EL certified personnel. Building on the information provided by the IDOE in the morning session, we will share current practices for program leadership and language policy that are working. Participants will have time to work together in regional and mixed groups to develop shared advocacy goals and plan strategies for accomplishing these goals.

Led by our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Trish Morita-Mullaney, and Dr. Donna AlbrechtContent for the collaborative event includes two components: 1) Graduation pathways for multilingualism; and 2) roundtables of pressing issues for multilingual students. Speakers from Indiana districts who have adopted and are implementing graduation pathways for multilingualism will share the challenges and opportunities for creating such avenues for multilingual students. Roundtables will be facilitated by district educators across the following topics:

    1. Science of reading and its impact on ML students
    2. Over and under identification of MLs for special programming
    3. Dual language programming and the proportional inclusion of MLs
    4. Implementation of the TOR system
    5.  Multilingual Pathways for MLs

The event will conclude with actionable steps for INTESOL ELL Regional Collaborative.
